Search suppression / Australia
How article suppression works in Google search.
Search suppression aims to reduce the prominence of an unwanted result by improving the quality, relevance and authority of other legitimate results for the searches that surface it. It is different from deleting a publisher's article and it cannot guarantee a particular ranking outcome.
First, understand why the article ranks.
Publisher authority, links, freshness, relevance to the name or query and the weakness of competing results can all contribute. A suppression plan should begin with evidence about the actual search landscape.
Check legitimate removal pathways before suppression.
Depending on the circumstances, inaccurate, unlawful, outdated or policy-violating material may have publisher, platform, legal or search-engine processes available. Appropriate professional advice may be needed. Suppression should not be presented as a substitute for a valid removal pathway.
Build results that deserve to compete.
Owned websites, executive pages, company profiles, credible third-party coverage and other relevant assets can strengthen the result set when they contain useful information and earn genuine authority. Thin duplicate sites are not a durable strategy.
Measure the whole result set.
Success is evaluated by the visibility and position of relevant results across the target queries over time, not by a single screenshot. Search is dynamic, so reporting should distinguish observed movement from promises about future rankings.
